I wonder what the base software requirements would be for "Joe Average Company" to consider using a Linux distribution in preference to Windows? Windows probably has a huge advantage due to inertia, and we've been promised the "year of Linux on the desktop" probably for the last 15 years now, but I'm finding that LibreOffice can do everything I'd want to do in Word or Excel (and probably PowerPoint as well) and if Kolab has mail/calendar functionality equivalent to Exchange, then I'm wondering if there's anything essential for general office use that's missing now? If the primary purpose of medicine is to reduce suffering, then I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with witholding drugs from people who need them because there's a chance they might be abused.

And if we want to extend suffering reduction to drug addicts and their families as well, then giving them access to measured doses would go a long way to helping reduce the chance of accidental overdose.

In the immediate term, I've been making do with this 'super ghetto submit preview':
  1. Wrap your submission text with
...
tags (I'm using square brackets instead of angle brackets here for reasons).
  2. Save it as an .html file and open it in the browser.
  3. That will give you a rough idea of how your submission will look, and you can double check all your links work and point to the right places.
  4. [Optional]: You can put [p][/p] in the blank lines to preserve the paragraph structure, but you'll probably want to remove them again when you submit.
  5. Then strip the
tags again, paste and submit...

I think it's almost axiomatic that any significant UI changes will cause outrage in the short term (e.g. Windows 8, Slashdot Beta, any time Facebook changes anything, Xbox 360 dashboard, Netflix...). People hate change; even actual interface improvements will probably be met with hostily in the short term. As a developer, you can expect at least a couple of weeks of overwhelmingly negative feedback for any significant UI alterations you make -- but if you're not starting to see mixed to positive to responses once the initial shock dies down, then you may have to admit that you have actually made things worse...

I just wrote up a submission for you! If I have time, I'll see if I can do a couple over the weekend as well. I may be being dense again, but it's not clear if we can vote on articles in the pipe, or how to get them onto the front page?
I did notice a couple of minor points around submitting:
  • A Preview button might be nice :)
  • I got bitten by the Unicode rejection when trying to submit, which I think was due to extended characters in the source article I quoted:
    • I needed to replace any visibly non-ASCII characters I could see (em-dashes mainly), but still couldn't submit.
    • I then copied the submission text out of |. and pasted into Notepad, then copy-pasted it back, which seemed to render the text admissible.
Other than that it was pretty straightforward :)
While I'm here, one last thing which would be superawesome would be a couple of navigation links in the comment view:

  • Prev/next in thread
  • Prev/next on site

I like the fact that these sitesall have their own look and feel, and I think it's possible over time that they will all organically find their own niches, and I might end up spending more time on one than the others, but for now, I'm happy enough to bounce around them all, and think it's too early to be worry about duplication of effort.

It seems quite clear that the 'beta episode' has spurred a lot of people into action, and with all these new sites coming to my attention, it sort of feels a bit like when I first went online (probably getting on for 20 years ago).
